Yesterday I made a short form video responding to Toronto Today’s recent article discussing the large increase in demand for Private School education over the past several years.
This increase in applications to Private Schools in Toronto is directly tied to Doug Ford’s systematic defunding of the public education system, and is part of a broader plan to manufacture the privatization of all currently-public welfare systems.
In today’s podcast episode, I extend the arguments that I made in my short form video, and do a deep dive into:
The current segregation within public schools, and between public and private education
The true cost of privatizing education, from the perspective of an educator
The problematic nature of the message that Private school education is inherently superior to Public school education
The conservative values spread within Private school culture
My personal experiences as a student within the Private and Public school systems
While the case studies I discuss focus on the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Private School system, the discussion of privatization of Education is applicable on a much broader scale, not only to Ontario, but also to Canada, and even to other Global North countries that are currently trending right wing politically.
